Real-time and secure application connectivity for 120 branches for a large Retail Chain – using Nirad’s N100-I SD-WAN EDGE
Objective/Goal:
A large Retail chain was looking to create a secure and efficient communication between its 120+ branches and a cloud-based financial application. The primary objectives were to establish secure connections, achieve direct internet breakout for essential business applications, and improve overall network performance.
Challenges/Requirements:
The Retail Branch aimed to securely access a cloud-hosted financial application critical for their billing processes. This required establishing secure communication channels between the branches and the cloud, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality. Additionally, the need for direct internet breakout from local branches was essential for optimized access to business communication applications like Office 365, Salesforce etc.
Technology Used:
The solution employed Nirad SD-WAN, a cutting-edge software-defined networking solution designed to provide enhanced security, flexibility, and scalability for businesses. The chosen product for deployment was the N100-I SD-WAN EDGE.

The architecture was designed to address the Retail Branch’s specific requirements and challenges:
1. Deployment and Connectivity spoke/EDGEside:
– N100-I SD-WAN EDGE, a single SIM branch device, was selected to support up to 4 wired WAN connections.
– The EDGE device aggregated available WAN connection bandwidth from both SIM and wired WAN connections.
– The Bandwidth requirement by the Retail Branch was 6 Mbps
2. Secure Cloud Gateway HUB/DC:
– The EDGE device established a secure connection to the Nirad SD-WAN cloud Gateway (NVX86) using a secure VPN tunnel.
– NIRAD SD-WAN cloud Gateway (NVX86) was hosted on a Private or Public Cloud instance provided by the customer.
3. Cloud Application Access:
– NVX86 facilitated a connection between the cloud-based financial applications and the Retail Branch via a secure VPN tunnel.
– The architecture ensured that branch employees could securely access financial applications through the tunnel while enabling direct internet breakout for business applications.
4. Traffic Management:
– The secure tunnel bandwidth was reserved specifically for financial application traffic, ensuring optimal performance and responsiveness.
– Business application traffic, such as Office 365 and Salesforce, accessed the internet directly from the retail branch.
5. Centralized Management and Monitoring:
– NIRAD SD-WAN Controller, hosted on NIRAD cloud, allowed IT administrators to efficiently manage, monitor, and troubleshoot both EDGE and Gateway devices.
– The secure websocket connection ensured seamless communication between the Controller, EDGE, and Gateway devices.
Outcomes:
The implementation of Nirad SD-WAN brought about significant benefits for retail chain, including:
1. Real-time and Secure Connectivity: – Secure communication channels were established between the branches and the cloud-based financial application, ensuring real time data transfer and therefore billing/ revenue visibility even from remote branches while maintaining high data confidentiality and integrity.
2. Improved access to business applications: – The architecture facilitated direct internet breakout, leading to improved access and performance for essential business applications like Office 365 and Salesforce.
3. Improved Network Management: – The NIRAD SD-WAN Controller provided centralized management, monitoring, and troubleshooting capabilities for both EDGE and Gateway devices, streamlining IT operations.
4. Scalability and Flexibility: – The Nirad SD-WAN solution allowed the Retail chain to scale its network infrastructure seamlessly, supporting current and future business needs.
